How To Have A Successful Family Christmas Photo Shoot

We recently had a family Christmas photo shoot downtown, in the beautiful city of Charleston.  I love all the sweet memories captured in our pictures.  I'm so excited that our family will be receiving beautiful Christmas cards along with pictures this year.

Having a photo shoot with your little one can be a challenge and you want everything to go perfect and look perfect.  I'm going to give you some tips on how to plan a successful photo shoot and hopefully this will help and give you an idea to prepare.

1.  Mommy's and Daddy's no matter how much time you think you have to get ready, get ready way in advance.  Allow yourself plenty of time.  Even those small things like polishing your nails!

2.  Plan out your outfits WAY in advance and try them on and look at yourself in the mirror.  Take test picture with your outfits even if it's with a camera phone so you can see the big picture.  Plan out your spouses outfit and your child's outfit with plenty of time.

3.  It might be a good idea to bring a person along with you to the shoot to watch your children and entertain them for those shots and so they can gear their attention to the camera!  Bring along your child's favorite stuffed animal.

4.  Wear your hair according to the weather.  For example, I live in Charleston and it's right by the beach.  The particular day we shot pictures was humid and you could definitely feel the moisture in the air.  My hair gets frizzy in that type of humidity because it is naturally wavy.  Looking back I wish I would have maybe done a half up do or even an up do.

5.  Find out the feel you want for your shoot.  You can do casual, glamour, formal, semi formal...pick what you guys want and feel comfortable with and make sure the whole family is flowing together with similar colors, styles, etc.  The location is also key for the feel.

6.  Do research on family poses...stress to your photographer that you have these certain poses in mind and have your photographer capture those fabulous poses. My favorite are candid poses.  These are poses that you are not looking directly at the camera.  And as silly as it sounds practice those poses because you want to make sure that picture makes the final cut.  And again stress to your photographer you want to get some candid shots.  Some photographers will not give you direction as how to pose so that's when you have to take charge.

7.  Think about props like a blanket, candy cane, Santa hat etc  if you want them incorporated.

8.  For a Holiday shoot it's ideal to look festive with out going over board.  Try a red lip! Or a fur vest, wear all white, wear all black, mix in some red to your wardrobe.  Do whatever you feel comfortable, that will show the seasons little touches.

9.  Stand straight, shoulders back, chin up! SMIZE :)

10.  Last but not least have fun!  Every moment spent with your beautiful family are precious moments to be treasured forever.  Sometimes things don't always go the way we planned with little things here and there but I can guarantee you those pictures are going to come out amazing.  And like a quote out there says "Don't sweat the small stuff."

xoxo,
Marilu
